Automated watering system

Hi,

I'm considering setting up an automated watering system for my orchard. I'd be looking at having a system that will automatically start watering when certain conditions are met such as soil moisture dropping below a certain level or a certain amount of rain not falling over a certain period of time. So for example 5mm of rain not falling in two days. If the conditions were met then the irrigation system would open up for a set period of time, say an hour and then close.

So the system would require receiving weather data, either from a weather station or weather service. It would also require sensors to collect data and then a system to record it. The system would need to take action based on the data received.

There are a number of youtube videos about this topic. I really like what this fellow did for his little garden.

Has anyone gone down this path and can share stories of what they used and how it went for them?

Hi rramesh. Yes I would be interest to learn of the product you plan to sell in Australia . I am heading to the farm at the end of September. One of my main tasks will be to get in order the rain water collection in order. There is a 20,000 litre water tank to collect the water.

I plan to install an electric pump and piping to pump the water from this tank up to a smaller holding tank. The pump will be controlled by float switches in both tanks. Water will flow from this tank to the irrigation system that is downhill. The holding tank is next to the house. There is both electricity and Internet available there. Internet access is always on and is broadband.

Over time I plan to expand the system by installing more water tanks.

    Hi,

I am keen too. However I don't live on the farm. We are heading up at the end of the month. I have a few tasks to do there and it will be full on. One of the tasks will be repairing water guttering on a shed. The water collected off the roof will be stored in a water tank that is there. I will have to purchase and set up a water pump and then look at purchasing a small holding tank.

I would prefer to do all this and have it set up before considering an automated watering system as this would take up limited time and resources.
