i read on the web about a product they use on sheep pre lambing.  "Studies in Australia have demonstrated the significant economic benefits that can be realised by treating ewes pre-lambing with Capsules. These benefits include increases in lambing and marking percentages, increases in lamb weaning weights, increases in ewe weight at weaning and improvements in wool quality and yield."
Has anyone tried something like this for goats and what were your results like? what products did you use? did the cost justified the extra size etc?

Hi goat girl,

to be frank, there are probably hundreds of products you could try using, and for every product there are going to be trials that show that the product is good, and other trials that show the product is no good.

Just a couple things off the top of my head that have given me good results:

- putting calcium blocks out for the does before kidding and through lactation has given me less prolapses, stronger heavier kids, stronger does
- supplementary feeding with some grain/pellets the last month before kidding and the first 6 wks of lactation again has resulted in stronger heavier kids, increased doe weight at weaning, fibre quality and yield
- flush feeding at joining, along with the buck effect, increases the twin percentage

There are probably others I havent thought of atm

about 3 weeks before joining, bump up the does nutrition a bit. Traditionally its done using lupins (cracked is best), 200 - 500g per head per day. You can also use lucerne, or otherwise just any sort of increase in protein (so, increase their pellets, or move to a higher protein pellet, etc.)

Basically what it does is makes the does ovulate more eggs, so you end up with more multiple births.

I flush feed with either lupins, lucerne or both every year, and I have definitely seen the benefits.

I'd say they are talking about controlled release anthelmitic (worming) capsules. Basically they release the drench over a 100 day period. I understand that there are two types available, one with a mectin type and one with a bz. They are not registered for use on goats, but a friend of mine pops one in every goat about a week before kidding each year and does no other worm control for ther whole year. In a high rainfall zone that is absolutely amazing.
