Generator
« on: December 16, 2011, 08:33:36 PM »
Hi all, seeking some advice please.  I need to buy a generator because the power here is becoming more and more unreliable, especially as we now seem to be having lots of storms.  Excuse my ignorance, but how do I work out what size generator I need?  I don't want to buy a bigger one than necessary.  What I need to run is a light and most importantly the water pump.  The last two power outages has meant no showers or flushing the loo which has been really inconvenient, especially as it happened right when I was getting ready to go to work - I couldn't have a shower.  The fridge would also be good to run but not essential as rarely is the power out for more than a few hours.

So, do I just add up all the watts these items use and then watt?  Ha ha sorry.     Please advise - thanks

If you add up all the watts you would use at one time, you times it by a factor of three and that will give you the Wattage/KVa genarator you need.

A generator needs a motor to turn it, to generate electricity.

Any generator with a Honda motor are very good, but as in all things maybe exxy.

There are a million chinese imitations of the Honda motor generators on Ebay.

Most generator websites will assist in working out what size you need.

Terrific - thanks Jock.  My fire pump has a Honda motor (Davey pump) and I have been very happy with it, but you're right - it was expensive.  I wanted to get good quality as a crappy fire pump is too much of a risk.  But the generator is more a convenience thing.  Whilst I don't want to buy rubbish I don't think I can stretch to a Honda this time round.  I will do the calculations as you have suggested to work out the size I need.  Thanks!

Thanks for the further advice and links, Jock.  I like the free postage on some of the ebay ones!  Those prices are much better than other websites I have looked at.  The Dunlite ones look good too.  I will get OH to have a look to see what he thinks.

Hi Jock, we are interested in this generator from eBay: http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/NEW-5-5HP-2-5KVA-GENERATOR-W-HONDA-GX160-DIGITAL-AVR-/140608679444?pt=AU_Hardware&hash=item20bcee2e14

Unfortunately the specs do not mention how loud it is and when we asked the question of the seller they said they didn't know and that all the info they have from the manufacturer is already up on the ad.  You would think they could find out for us but no such luck.

Looks good.

Seems pretty cheap.

Can you look up the feedback on that unit.

I think even the Honda motors are now made in China.

But at $500, it is a cheap unit. You can't go wrong, I don't think.

Does MOTH use them at his work??

They are all noisy, put a box over it and it will quieten it down a bit.

I will look for feedback on that model - good suggestion.

OH uses generators occasionally but when he does whichever company he is working for at the time usually supplies them.  The last one he used was a Scorpion and he said it was really very good.

I have looked at other models on eBay and they vary greatly with the noise factor.  The cheaper ones usually seem to be the noisiest for their size.  If we put a box over it I expect we will need to cut out a hole for the exhaust?

Have a look at these.

Made in China also.

They sold heaps during the QLD Floods and only had a few returned.

At least if you had a problem they are local.
